“We need grade S males,” says Bai Jiawen, “not for the technological progress they bring, but for the symbolic sway they hold over other males.

If you’re here, it is entirely feasible for us to publicise our history, including the strength and deeds of grade S males.

With you at our backs, any restless male would have to think twice before pulling anything.”

So basically, a mascot.

The more they demonise the monstrosity of grade S males, the more they would actually deter them in turn.

Grade S males basically perceive the entire world differently – this is what Cheng Zhaoci understood during the testing.

He could basically deconstruct everything he could see with his mind.

It’s not even a superpower, because it is simply the result of a terrifying level of perceptiveness and memory processing.

With the mind processing an obscene amount of data in record amount of time, everything could be digitised and rationalised.

The keyword here is ‘rational,’ and this is likely what Bai Jiawen described, the whole transformation of males into these exceptionally calm and emotionless selves.

Unfortunately, being a simple, open-minded comic artist, Cheng Zhaoci had no tragedy to exploit.

He’s an orphan – but, if one has always been without parents, even before he could remember, he doesn’t exactly feel bereft of anything.

Never mind this life, when there are so many insectoids who care about him as family.

As a literate, well-educated and easily satisfied male of the new generation, his most lingering regret is in his lack of bodily pleasure!

He certainly felt that extreme rationality during the test, but it’s different to a brainwash, so his actual personality and biases would still be there.

“As soon as the Awakening occurs for you, we will be sending you to school.

Are you interested in scientific inquiries We do need something of substance to build up an image of you,” if they don’t want to be accused of making stuff up, at least.

“I think I’m going to need some time to think about it.

It’s all just so sudden,” says Cheng Zhaoci, scratching his head.

He saw the President all of a sudden, and turned out to  be grade S, and he learned of some taboo history of the insectoids.

He needs a bit of time to mull over.

“Understood.

By the way, I recommend you spend time together with your future cijun from now on.

As you’re already 18, your Awakening may occur at any time,” Bai Jiawen knows Cheng Zhaoci will need time to adjust, “he’ll have to be there to help alleviate the pressure.”

“But isn’t the frontline a bit more tense these days” Cheng Zhaoci knows Wei Zhuo only took this single day off today.

He arrived before noon, and he’ll probably have to be leaving before evening comes.

“It’s alright.

You can accompany him,” Bai Jiawen says, “I’ve already left your safety in the hands of the Chairman and the Institute.

You will be as safe as can be,” even if the Capital planet were to explode, those tough little buggers of the First Research Institute would still be absolutely fine.

It is actually best if Wei Zhuo could be taken off the frontline to focus his attention on helping smooth Cheng Zhaoci’s awakening, but Wei Zhuo isn’t exactly playing an easily replaceable role in the current battlefield.

More specifically, he’s the second-in-command.

If he is taken off the frontline, Jin Yue will definitely be seizing the opportunity to strike back.

They’re also no sitting ducks.

“The, the frontline!” Cheng Zhaoci can’t help but raise his voice.

He grew up during relatively peaceful times, never mind even seeing a frontline first-hand, “wouldn’t my pheromones be bursting everywhere when I awaken There are a lot of shemale soldiers there.”

“You will be alone in the spaceship.

The filtration system will be the Institute’s finest creation.

Believe me, it’s safer for you to be in their hands than being on the Capital planet itself,” especially because those nerdy shut-ins are the ones more scared of getting wounded than anyone else.

Cheng Zhaoci is still clearly quite confounded when leaving the side room.

He tries to make a smile when seeing his dad, Wei Zhuo and everyone else’s worried gazes, “I’m fine.”

Wei Zhuo’s expression turns gloomy as he walks forward to check up on Cheng Zhaoci’s body, but Cheng Zhaoci suddenly pulls himself into an embrace.

Putting his head right up against Wei Zhuo’s chest, he looks up and says, “I have a favour to ask; I know it’s sudden.”

“What’s wrong” Wei Zhuo asks, looking at Bai Jiawen who is closing the door to the room.

With Cheng Zhaoci in his tow, he backs off a little, wary.

Bai Jiawen, meanwhile, is giving Wei Zhuo’s chest area some funny looks; Cheng Zhaoci’s head is rubbing right there.

“You’re leaving this afternoon already.

Do you have time to go collect the marriage certificate with me first” Cheng Zhaoci is too vividly aware of what the alleviation during his Awakening entails, so at least, before then, he needs to get their relationship officially stamped.

He can’t ever subject Wei Zhuo to a child outside marriage! That’s utterly irresponsible!

Insectoids can marry freely at 18, but because Cheng Zhaoci has to get aptitude-tested today, no one, not even Cheng Zhaoci, had this planned at all.

Xiao Ji and He Huaijian are looking at each other; even Lu Yao looks awfully surprised.

“Oh.

Sure,” Wei Zhuo agrees.

So a dumbstruck Wei Zhuo got dragged along for the ride as Cheng Zhaoci quickly waves the equally dumbstruck Cheng Jin and co.

goodbye.

They arrive at the Civil Union Department.

Wei Zhuo has been registered as Cheng Zhaoci’s cijun.

Both their identification documents have been updated accordingly.

After leaving the Department, Wei Zhuo’s mind has finally returned to working order.

Wait! Wait just one single second! What in the world happened just now!
