Chapter 44.1

Two Worlds

Everything is proceeding to plan, including his career.

After resolving to become more responsible, his comic has been progressing at a healthy pace.

So before the end of the year, he finishes the second chapter of his comic.

Xiao Ji and He Huaijian are also enjoying their end-of-year festivities, and will be home for a month.

Perhaps lacking the common sense of gender boundaries, Xiao Ji is always coming to hang out with the three males.

He is naturally curious about what they’re drawing, but Cheng Zhaoci has refused adamantly to let him see.

He Huaijian, meanwhile, is busy with… something or another.

He wouldn’t say anything even when Cheng Zhaoci asks, only telling him “you’ll know when it’s done.”

Speaking of the duo, Xiao Ji and He Huaijian are now seriously contending for the position of top of their year.

“Ci-zai, you would never have guessed that after you came to our school that one time a bunch o’ bastards wanted to buddy-buddy up with me.

I gave them all the cold shoulder,” Xiao Ji is quite furious talking about them, getting defensive over his Ci-zai, “we’re gonna be eighteen after New Year’s.

Are you going to marry the Squadron Leader then”

Insectoids can legally marry without parental consent at 18.

Mar-Marriage! He, he’s just started dating… It seems quite sudden to marry in less than a year, but, if it’s Wei Zhuo… He doesn’t find himself opposed to the idea.

“Honestly, you two suit each other.

The Squadron Leader is grade S, you know! He’s a super fighting machine!” Xiao Ji, like your typical shemale, loves to brawl and respects the strong, “and you’ve been amazing too! Everyone is talking about the comics you drew! Most of the students are your fans.”

“And so are you, ace student,” Cheng Zhaoci pats Xiao Ji on the shoulder, “you’ve changed a lot since the days on Zhousuo.”

On Zhousuo, Xiao Ji has never been clean, thanks to him scavenging and fighting for resources day in, day out with a big sack on his back.

Now he’s properly dressed in a military academy attire, and his unruly red hair has also been neatly combed.

Xiao Ji disagrees, “I feel the same though.

It just feels more hopeful when we’re off that barren rock.”

“The only way is still up,” Cheng Zhaoci chuckles, “we’ll all lead better and better lives.”

“Anyway, you’re packing up Going on a trip”

“I’ll be staying over at the Squadron Leader’s house for a few days,” Cheng Zhaoci’s smile fades, “as a refugee, I suppose.”

Xiao Ji is deeply concerned, “is there going to be trouble”

“Not yet, but we’re suspecting it’ll be soon,” Cheng Zhaoci doesn’t say a word of the storm to come to the confused Xiao Ji.

The next day, after a final shared meal between the five of them, the three males left in groups.

Not long afterwards, the second arc of the romance comic is out.

Cheng Zhaoci has already turned off all notification on his holodeck, and is now ‘squatting’ at Wei Zhuo’s.

Wei Zhuo is off work today, so Cheng Zhaoci is happily indulging himself in Wei Zhuo’s cooking.

While Cheng Zhaoci is gorging himself on the feast, Wei Zhuo sighs, reading Meng Yuele’s bombardment of sadness on his holodeck, and asks, “do you have a preference for tragic stories”

“It’s not a tragedy this time.

It’s a sweet story, and they’ll be together in the end.

That’s all I’m willing to say at this point,” Cheng Zhaoci strains his neck to watch Meng Yuele’s poignant and incoherent tirade on the holodeck, “I’m not heartless, you know, but spoilers would ruin the profound climax later.”

If they already know everything will turn out alright in the end, this second arc would have been far less effectively impactful.

The value of adversity will be lessened, like Zhou Luoluo’s reaction.

Knowing they’ll be together means that when they do finally meet each other again, there will be emotional satisfaction, but there won’t be a good sense of payoff.

“It’s like life.

If one day, some insectoid revealed everything about your entire life ahead.

When your glory days will be, when you’ll fall in love, when you’ll die, and you’re unable to escape this foretold pattern until the day you die, that practically makes life meaningless,” Cheng Zhaoci says, helping himself to some more meat in his bowl, “that’s why I’m not explaining a thing even if they get on their knees and beg.”

Or want to pull a bag over his head and beat him up, since no one can find where he is right now, hehehehe.

Wei Zhuo, though, gives a rather unexpected response, “if an insectoid told me a very long time ago, that I would eventually come to meet you, I suppose I would have led a more hopeful and happy life for the past twenty-odd years, instead of the dull and uneventful slog that it ended up being.”

Cheng Zhaoci pauses his eating, looking at Wei Zhuo.

Wei Zhuo’s eyes are serious.

He means what he said.

He thinks that was what his life was.

It almost sounds like everything he has done in the past 20 years was a piss in the wind compared to meeting Cheng Zhaoci.

It is such a sad sentiment to make.

Wei Zhuo is an accomplished shemale with grade S physical aptitude and countless battles and missions under his belt.

He is a decorated veteran.

‘Slog’ is the one word that should not have been used to describe his life thus far.

But Wei Zhuo’s eyes… He isn’t lying.

In fact, he looks slightly anxious, but his eyes have the sparkle of hope.

For the first time, Cheng Zhaoci realises that it might not actually be Wei Zhuo’s true nature to play by the rules and follow the law and established order to the letter, or he wouldn’t have described his high-achieving life as a ‘slog.’ There is actually a stubbornness in him, a deviation, that he has kept suppressed very well all this time.

He locked himself up in the chains of society, trapping, suffocating his true self in a cage.
